Route details

Meeting at Haytor Lower Car Par

Directions:

Approximately 8 miles, probably taking us 4 hours, allowing time for stops and photos. The route is mainly on beaten pathways, but they are by no means flat or smooth. Wear walking boots please.

Please be prepared for changeable weather. Dartmoor is famous for providing four seasons in one day!

There used to be a refreshment vendor in the car park before Covid hit. If we’re lucky they’ll be back, but at the time of writing, my crystal ball is very cloudy!

We start at Haytor Lower Car Park, where there are toilets and an information desk.

The car park is Pay and Display, Cash only, £3 for all day.

We’ll visit the massive granite stacks of Haytor – if anyone wants to climb up to the top, they can, but it’ll probably be a tad blowy up there!

Down to Haytor Quarries, which should be bursting into life with the spring weather, then off across the moor to Smallacombe Rocks, where there is a nice example of a Bronze age Roundhouse.

Back towards the quarries, pick up the Granite Tramway and head towards Emsworthy Nature Reserve. As we walk, the views across to the blue haze of Bluebells on Holwell Lawn are amazing! We may even hear some Cuckoos. I’ve heard 4 there once!

At the barn we should be able to walk through a field of Bluebells!

When we have had our fill of the sights and smells of the bluebell fields, we will make our way back to our cars, passing through Saddle Tor, and maybe re-visiting Haytor if people want to.
