Shipley Bridge - Avon Dam Car Park

Avon Dam - Car Park, Shipley Bridge, TQ10 9EL

Shipley Bridge, England, GB, TQ10 9EL

Join us on Saturday 9th July for a Pi Singles Dartmoor walk around Redlake.

Join us for a fabulous ten mile walk around some beautiful parts of South West Dartmoor.

Meet at 10.00 for a 10.15 start at Shipley Bridge (sometimes called Avon Dam) car park.

Bring coins, just in case they’ve installed a parking meter – they’re getting everywhere now. It’s now £4 for the whole day. The car park isn’t big and they’ve put boulders on the roadsides, so we can’t overflow there, so please do get there earlier rather than later.

There is NO phone signal at the car park, but there are toilets, and maybe a snack van.

There is only one way to get there – take the A38. Whatever your satnav tells you, leave at the Marley Head junction. Follow the signs for Avon Dam. Once on the small road, Sat Nav should then be able to take you there.

The lanes are a bit narrow, and you may wonder where the heck you are going! Check where satnav wants to take you – is it the right car park?

What 3 words location is ///looked.sizzled.husky

grid ref is SX 6804 6290.

The post code is TQ10 9EL, but please remember that in rural areas, it covers several square miles! My satnav thought that it would take me to Didworthy Park (a big house)

Its close, but its not the Avon Dam car park!

The walk is about 15km, and could take 5 or 6 hours, depending on stops. Bring a packed lunch and we’ll find somewhere suitable to stop.

We’ll follow the old Zeal Tor Tramway, join the end of the Redlake tramway to the remains of the Redlake China Clay works. The spoil tip always makes me think of Mount Doom in Lord of the Rings! We’ll then turn back and make our way down into the valley and cross the Avon by the ancient Clapper Bridge. We’ll follow the Avon downstream, past the Avon Reservoir and its Dam then pick up the Dam’s access road back to the car park.

It is mostly flat-ish (for Dartmoor), but we can never completely get away from hills!

The Tramway section is along the high ground and is very exposed to the elements, so please make sure that you are wearing proper Dartmoor clothing!

This is a ticket only event.

Refund/Cancellation Policy – Due to weather or unforeseen circumstances, we have the right to cancel the event and will refund in full with a minimum of 24 hours notice.
