ABOUT THE WALK
Level walks in Devon are scare, but this delightful exploration of Exminster Marshes is not only easy and level, but packed with interest. Much of it follows Exeter’s Ship Canal. First cut in 1567 to by-pass the Exe, it was extended in the 17th century and again in 1826 to Turf Locks.
The Exe Estuary is an internationally important site of Special Scientific Interest and on e of the finest places in England to see wildfowl. Thousands of geese, ducks and waders depend upon the marshes and mudflats for feeding and roosting, especially during migration periods and winter, when some 20,000 wetland birds visit. Mostly migrants from Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, they comprise of many species.
