Join us for a wonderful festive Dartmoor walk and Lunch on Saturday 14th December

Meeting at 10.15am for a prompt start at 10.30am.

Route details

I would suggest meeting at Venford Carpark (West) Grid Ref SX 6797 7185,

Directions:

Leave the A38 at the PEARTREE junction and head towards the River Dart Country Park. Pass the park, keep going, taking care as you cross the Holne Bridge, go up the steep hill and take the road on the LEFT towards HOLNE. If you reach the top of the hill and start going down, you’ve overshot! Keep on this road as it twists and turns, passing by Holne, following signs for HEXWORTHY. The road steadily climbs until you reach the Moor Gate and a Cattle Grid. Keep going. Beware of livestock wandering around and crazy drivers pretending that they are rally drivers! Stay on this road until you have passed across the Venford Reservoir dam, then turn into hidden entrance to the carpark on the Right. NOTE – there are two Venford Reservoir car parks – the one that we are meeting at is the one across the dam and that you CANNOT see from the road, and that has the (closed) toilets.

Its Dartmoor, its December. It has been/is/will be raining, so waterproof coat & overtrousers and good waterproof  boots will be required. It will be wet and muddy underfoot. Please, no denim jeans! Check the weather forecast for yourself and dress accordingly.

The 12km route is mainly flatish, but remember, it is Dartmoor! There are lovely views across the moor, down the Upper Dart Gorge and of Venford Reservoir. We will be walking along an old leat, a miner’s track, passing by burial cairns, hut circles, ancient field boundaries, old mine workings, a Tor or two and an old Dartmoor Cross.
You are welcome to bring a hot drink and a snack to have en-route, but the Dartmoor Lodge do a rather good all day December menu that we could sample after the walk.
